Tips and Tricks in Power BI

Let’s get into it. Today’s tips and tricks will be listed below.

  1. Zoom in/out in Power Query Editor
Depending from the screen size you use, navigating through the data table might be challenging and hard to read because of the text size in the editor.

If you want to have a closer look to the data and be able to read the content, use:

  • CTRL + SHIFT and the + or - sign
  • CTRL SHIFT + (to zoom in)
  • CTRL SHIFT - (to zoom out)

2. Switch from Chart View to Data Table quickly
Let’s say you have a chart where you have the Profit % by Segment. If you want to see the underlying data table for this chart, then use the shortcut below.

  • ALT + SHIFT + F11 If you want to close it, just hit ESC

That will bring a new screen where you can see both, the chart as well as the underlying data as a data table. See below.

If you are curious to learn on how to build charts like the ones above, refer to my previous newsletter on how to create a custom theme.

3. Use TAB key to navigate through charts
Power BI is part of Microsoft Office and just like other apps within their package, you can leverage on lot of shortcuts you would normally use in Word or Excel. Whenever you are on a Report View, you can use TAB key to navigate through charts/tables. Every time you hit TAB it will highlight the visual currently selected. If you want to move backwards, use SHIFT + TAB key.

4. Lock Objects in Power BI
Do you get annoyed by the idea that you might select a chart by mistake and move it to a place you did not wanted to initially? Well, there is a way to lock that chart so it does not happen again.

Simply select the visual or the data you want to lock and then go to View Tab,

Page Options section and then select Lock objects. If you want to unlock it, just remove the tick from Lock Objects.

Cheers
